Siberian shamans used the Amanita muscaria for spiritual journeys. The active chemicals in the Amanita muscaria are not entirely used when passing through a body, so that the urine of one who had consumed mushrooms could be drunk and a person inebreated again. Shaman of sibera would also drink the urine of reindeer who had consumed the Amanita muscaria mushrooms. Some people think this is where the myth of Santa Claus and the flying reindeer began. Quote: It has been claimed by some that the Viking Berserkers, warriors who were insane with rage, did not feel pain, and thought themselves invincible, ate these Amanita muscaria mushrooms before entering their berserker trance. Quote: These mushrooms have influenced humanity for thousands of years. They have helped to shape what we know now as Christianity, Hinduism, Judaism, and perhaps some of the most famous philosophical ideas from Plato and Aristotle. I believe it is important for mankind to learn more about these “spiritual” mushroom experiences, for the sake of understanding our history and ourselves. Quote: George Wasson, a noted mycophile and writer who published several books about the relationship between mushrooms and man, said believed that many religions were based upon using the Amanita muscaria mushrooms as a sacrament. He believed that the soma in Vedic literature was actually an Amanita muscaria. In the Vedic literature it said that the only way to reach enlightenment was to use soma. Of the ancient Greek ceremonies, Stamets said, “Aristotle, Plato, and Sophocles all participated in religious ceremonies at Eleusis where an unusal temple honored Demeter, the Goddess of Earth. For over two milennia, thousands of pilgrims journeyed fourteen miles from Athens to Eleusis, paying the equivalent of a month's wage for the privilege of attending the annual ceremony. |
